Can heat tape start a fire?

No, as long as it's properly installed. However, improper installation, use, and/or maintenance of electrical heating cable can cause fires, electric shock, and/ or frozen pipes.

Will pipe freeze protection cables work on DC voltage?

No. They are not designed to be powered by DC voltage. They must be used with AC voltage.

What is heat trace?

Heat trace, heat tape, or heating cable for pipes is typically an electric heating cable that can be attached to the pipe which helps keep non-flowing water pipes in poorly insulated perimeter walls flowing despite harsh winter temperatures.

How long does it take for pipes to unfreeze if heat tape is installed?

Unfortunately there's no set answer for this because it depends on many factors such as the diameter of the pipes, the installation density of the heating cables, the outdoor temperature, the installation of thermal insulation sleeves, etc.

There are too many variables to provide an accurate answer. Even though this product is designed to keep pipes from freezing, it is not designed to thaw pipes. If your pipe has frozen with the heat tape installed and energized, please check the placement of the built-in thermostat and verify that the insulation has been properly installed and waterproofed.

Can Pipe Freeze Protection be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes, it can be used for both application types to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting during cold weather.

How does a heat tape for pipes work?

By attaching a heating cable to the exterior of a pipe, it will transfer the heat to the pipe to prevent frozen pipes. And with the use of pipe insulation the heat will be evenly spread and won't dissipate as quickly.

Can I coil or wrap the heating wire around the pipe?

Never spiral heating cable around pipes. Attach self regulating cable in straight runs at the 8 o'clock position, or if two runs are required (pipes greater than 12“ diameter) attach the cable at the 8 o'clock and the 4 o'clock positions. Please refer to the installation manual for further information.

Can I plug self regulating cable into an electrical outlet?

WarmlyYours offers a conversion kit (SR-PLUG-KIT) to enable a plug-in requirement. This kit includes ground fault equipment protection (GFEP). The receptacle must be 120V, grounded, and approved for wet locations if located outside. The self regulating cable must not exceed 140‘ in length.

Can I use an extension cord to connect pipe heat / heat trace cable?

WarmlyYours does not recommend using an extension cord for permanent installations. Pipe heat should always be plugged directly into a receptacle or hardwired to the circuit that is powering it.

Can pipe heat be installed in walls?

No. Only install pipe heat (heat trace cable) in accessible locations. Do not install this self regulating cable in walls or any place where the cable is hidden. Do not run it through walls, ceilings, or floors. The cable must be installed 10“ away from combustible surfaces, such as wood, and it should not be embedded in insulation or roofing material.

For exterior: Should I wrap the vertical exterior plastic pipe (3/4 inch ) with the electric tape then install fiberglass tubular insulation over it to keep dirt off the tape?

Do not wrap self regulating cable around the pipe in a coiled or spiral fashion, and do not use electric tape to attach it. WarmlyYours recommends attaching the cable in a straight run and to use aluminum or fiberglass tape, pipe straps, or plastic zip ties to attach the cable. Then cover the assembly with fire-resistant insulation and assure it is waterproof. Place electrical heating cable WARNING labels every 10‘, and where the label will be clearly visible.

How do I attach the PRO-Tect self regulating cable to the pipe?

Use plastic zip ties, aluminum or fiberglass tape, or pipe straps. Do NOT use vinyl electrical tape, masking tape or duct tape. Do NOT use metal wire or metal twist ties to attach the cable.

What is the difference between Self-Regulating and Constant Wattage Cabling?

As the names imply, constant wattage cable uses fixed wattage output per linear foot and does not automatically adjust in response to temperature changes. Self-regulating cable is manufactured with a resistance matrix placed between its 2 buss wires that varies the ohms resistance per linear foot to automatically adjust in response to temperature changes.
